Hemingway Editor Plus Review: Is It the Best Grammar Checker?

By Corbin Stewart

Minute Read

When Hemingway Editor Plus unveiled its AI upgrade, I couldn't help but take notice. With a background in professional writing, a tool that streamlines and simplifies intricate sentences was hard to resist.

We've all encountered that challenge: shaping sentences that strike the right balance between being informative and engaging. Hemingway Editor Plus addresses this issue head-on.

Its AI functionalities do more than just grammar checks. It pinpoints wordy sentences and impressively provides a simpler alternative. The tool reduces the time you'd typically spend rewording; with Hemingway Editor Plus, solutions are instant.

What also stood out to me was the promise that it can preserve your writing style while generating these easier to read sentences. It's not about overhauling what's been written but instead refining it. Your content continued to sound authentically like you but more precise and straightforward.

Key Takeaways

Pros:

  • Instantly rewrites complex sentences
  • User-friendly, simplified interface
  • Mastery in readability and clarity

Cons:

  • Currently in early beta
  • It’s easy to exhaust credits
  • Contextual understanding is sometimes limited

In this Hemingway Editor Plus review, we'll discuss my hands-on experience with the new AI writing tool. I'll highlight its strengths and areas where it can improve. Moreover, we'll see how it stacks up against other leading grammar checkers.

This isn't just an overview of features; it’s an in-depth analysis from someone who spends a lot of time writing.

Hemingway Editor Background

The Hemingway Editor has been a favorite tool for writers who value a simple to use editing app. Created by Adam and Ben Long to reflect Ernest Hemingway's no-nonsense and impactful style. Initially, it helped writers by pointing out complex sentences, when you're using passive voice, and if there's an overuse of adverbs, all of which make your writing difficult to read.

But the Hemingway Editor didn't stop improving. It evolved from a simple online editor to a robust desktop version with Hemingway Editor 3.

Now, writers can purchase the downloadable version for Mac and Windows in order to continue their work offline while still enjoying the great features the text editor includes. The one-time purchase of $19.99 made it accessible for many, proving that good writing doesn't have to be complicated or expensive.

Today, there's an exciting chapter: Hemingway Editor Plus.

This new version brings in the power of AI, making the editor smarter and more helpful. It's in the testing phase, but it shows promise. It aims to help you write by fixing issues on the spot. That's a big step up from just giving fast and responsive feedback. It means saving time and effort, making writing easier and faster for everyone.

The goal remains the same: Helping you tighten up your writing while you quickly edit your work. But with Hemingway Editor Plus, writers get more support to craft the best text possible by blending the simplicity of the Hemingway Editor with today's innovative technology.

In-Depth Hemingway Editor Plus Review

What Is Hemingway Editor Plus?

Hemingway Editor Plus is the new member of the Hemingway Editor family, now boosted with AI power. This tool does more than highlight errors; it instantly fixes them. It rewrites complex sentences and changes passive voice into active voice in just a few clicks, with the sole goal of improving your readability level.

So what makes this AI addition to the Hemingway Editor so unique? Hemingway Editor Plus keeps the beloved simplicity of the Hemingway Editor but adds a new feature.

It can finish your paragraphs while being able to continue writing in your style. This is great for solving writer's block when the right words are slipping from your grasp.

A screenshot of Hemingway's homepage, previewing what the app looks like.

You can use the free version of Hemingway Editor Plus just by visiting the new online version, making it easy to access anytime. And don't worry, it's still just as easy to use, even for beginners.

So, Hemingway Editor Plus combines the best parts of the beloved Hemingway App with a modern AI twist. The new Hemingway Editor App will help all writers, experienced or new, make their editing quicker and their writing easy to read.

What Are the Key Features of Hemingway Editor Plus?

Hemingway Editor Plus packs features that simplify editing and work towards improving your writing style. Here, will look at three features that stand out in Hemingway Editor Plus.

Quick Grammar Fixes

Hemingway Editor Plus is more than a virtual red pen for your drafts; it's an active collaborator in the writing process. Do you have a sentence dragging on or hiding behind the passive voice? The tool jumps in with an immediate fix.

What's the secret? A smart AI engine under the hood that's all about making your editing life quicker. It's not just about flagging what's wrong; it hands you the right way to turn your words around and fix your sentence structure.

Now, imagine trimming hours off your editing time. That's what this feature brings to the table.

Writers can say goodbye to the slow grind where you comb through lines trying to figure out improvements. Here, you get direct solutions that you can apply with a click.

The new editor keeps the same simplistic color-coded highlights in editing mode so you can quickly see what improvements you can make to your draft. Here's a quick look at the color highlight system;

Red Highlights
This means you have a very hard-to-read sentence, usually a symptom of being both long and complex.
Orange Highlights
This is a hard-to-read sentence, usually due to being either too complex or too long.
Green Highlights
This is when you've used the passive voice and need to switch it to an active voice.
Blue Highlights
This shows you where you've used an adverb, and as Mark Twain famously said, "When you catch an adverb, kill it." so try to minimize the adverbs!
Purple Highlights
This shows you where you've used a phrase that has a simpler alternative.
A screenshot of the different grammar suggestions Hemingway Editor provides, showcasing the different highlight colours it uses.
A screenshot of the Hemingway Editor Plus sales page highlight that it's AI attempts to keep your tone and word choice.

Keeps Your Writing Style

Your voice matters, and Hemingway Editor Plus gets that. When it steps in with suggestions to correct your grammar, it's not about overwriting your style but honing it.

The tool catches the vibe of your work — the cadence, the wordplay, the tone. So when it offers a tweak, it's keeping in line with the 'you' in your writing.

It's like having a sensitive editor who respects your voice, offering changes that don't derail your style but sharpen it.

Say Goodbye to Writer's Block

Who hasn't faced the dread of a blank page? Writer's block is real, but Hemingway Editor Plus offers a creative nudge.

It's ready with ideas for pushing forward when you're stuck. Maybe you paused at a tricky sentence, or you're tangled up in the plot.

Just cue the tool, and it rolls out suggestions to get the words flowing again. It's not taking the pen from your hand but offering a jumpstart to your engine.

Is Hemingway Editor Plus Beginner-Friendly?

Hemingway Editor Plus shines in its ease of use, especially for new writers. Its clean layout and direct feedback method take the fear out of editing. Let's break down why it's an ideal writing software for beginners.

Easy Editing - Hemingway Editor Plus catches common mistakes new writers make. Long sentences or passive voice? It highlights them and suggests fixes right away. This immediate help teaches beginners how to write clearer and more direct sentences.

Friendly Guidance - Editing can scare new writers, but Hemingway Editor Plus is different. It doesn't just correct; it teaches. With each suggestion, beginners learn to avoid typical errors. By seeing the AI rewrite your complicated sentences into something more digestible, you learn how to adjust your own writing too.

Convenient and Affordable - Hemingway Editor Plus is easy to reach online anytime, perfect for writers on the go. Its pricing is friendly for beginners, too, with a free online version and a free trial of the premium version. No credit card is required! This means anyone can start to benefit from this tool.

Easy-to-Use Design - Hemingway Editor Plus is excellent for beginners because of its clean layout. It's not confusing. The tool uses different colors to show you what to fix, making editing less scary. Each color tells you a different kind of mistake, so you know exactly what the problem is.

A screenshot of the Hemingway Editor Plus app in write mode, showcasing its minimalist design and distraction free interface.

Simple Writing and Editing Interface - The best part? You can switch from writing to editing quickly. When you want to write without distractions, just change the mode. Once you're done writing, you can switch to editing mode, where you'll find straightforward tips on what to change. This feature helps new writers focus on their work without feeling stuck. It makes the whole process of writing and editing smooth and easy.

Where Can You Access Hemingway Editor Plus?

Hemingway Editor Plus is usually easy to access because it's all online. You don't need to download anything, saving space on your computer or tablet. Just go online, and you're set to improve your writing anywhere you have internet access.

But there's a small catch. Because Hemingway Editor Plus uses AI for its rewriting features, it requires an internet connection.

A standalone desktop version is available, Hemingway Editor 3, and doesn't need an internet connection. You can use it anytime, but it doesn't have all the new helpful AI features that Hemingway Editor Plus has.

Will Hemingway Editor Plus Pass Popular AI Detection Tools?

You might be wondering if tools like Hemingway Editor Plus will change the human touch in your writing. "Will my customers still feel like I'm talking to them?" is a common concern.

I know how important it is to connect with your community and customers. It's all about trust.

But let's clear something up; being 'caught' by an AI detection tool isn't the end of the world.

Think about why you're writing. If you send out a newsletter or update your business blog, your readers need clarity. They want helpful information they can use. If a tool helps you do that, it's a win-win.

Keeping your unique voice is essential, but making sure people understand you is key.

Either way, I put Hemingway Editor Plus to the test with real-life tasks. I pretended to be our favorite fictitious plumber Joe who owns “Pipedream Plumbing Pros,” a local plumbing business.

I came up with a blog post idea called “Winter is Coming: 8 Essential Steps to Winterize Your Pipes Like a Pro.” It's something a company like ours would post (if we were in the plumbing business), and headed over to the Hemingway App editor to get to work with the introduction to our new post.

We asked the AI for help in two ways.

First, I got the introduction started with a couple of sentences and then asked it to help me finish off my thoughts.

A screenshot of my demo introduction with the "Continue Writing" feature selected

Next, I switched over to the editing mode, asked it to fix any suggestions it made, and watched it rewrite it in front of my eyes. Correcting all my sentences until the red highlights disappeared.

A screenshot of my demo introduction now in the edit mode with sentences highlighted for correcting with the "Fix it for me" button showing

Below is the final version of our blog post.

We’re going to use this to see if AI detectors can tell we used a little help. And more importantly, to check if our message stays clear, human, and personal. Because that's what running a local business is about — building local connections with your customers and audience.

A screenshot of the final version of our AI detector test content with assistance from Hemingway Editor Plus.

GPTZero

Our first test was with GPTZero. This AI detection tool rose in popularity popular as ChatGPT became a staple name in generative AI.

A screenshot of our test results from GPTZero showing that 46% of the content we tested was flaged as generated by AI.

From the results, the blog introduction made with Hemingway Editor Plus had a 46% chance of being AI-generated. But, not all sentences were flagged. Three out of nine sentences were suspected to be from AI.

This shows that while some parts might seem like they're from AI, much of it still feels human.

Writer

Next, I tested with Writer's AI Content Detector. The results were surprising after what we just saw with GPTZero

A screenshot of our test results from Writer showing that 100% of the content we tested was tagged as human-generated content.

The blog introduction was marked as 100% human-generated by Writer. This is a stark difference from GPTZero's feedback.

Copyleaks

Up next I tested with Copyleaks's AI Content Detector, and again it passed with flying colors saying it was all human written text, just as it did with Writer.

A screenshot of our test results from Copyleaks showing that 100% of the content we tested was tagged as human-generated content.

Content at Scale

Content at Scale was my last test. While it primarily recognized the content as human-written, it did flag a few areas as potentially AI-generated. A minor rewrite could address these concerns, further enhancing the natural feel of the Hemingway Editor Plus output.

What I’d Love to See Improved in Hemingway Editor Plus

Hemingway Editor Plus is still in early access. This means there might be some rough edges, but the core of a fantastic tool is definitely there. I'm looking forward to seeing how it grows in the coming months.

What's encouraging is the developers' responsiveness to feedback.

For instance, I emailed them suggesting a feature where users can switch between different generated sentences and pick the best one. A week later, that feature was in the tool. I'm not saying my email made the difference, as they might have already planned it, but it's great to see such quick updates based on feedback.

Yet, like all tools, Hemingway Editor Plus has had its moments where it stumbled. I've had a mostly positive experience, but I did notice a few issues. It's only fair to share these, so you know what to expect. Here's a quick list of my observations.

Observation 1: Credit Consumption

One of the first things that stood out to me was Hemingway Editor Plus and its credit system. You get 200 credits during your free trial or 5,000 credits every month with a monthly subscription. At first, this seems like a lot. But in reality, they could run out quite fast.

Here's how the credit system works: One credit equals one generated sentence. But if you rewrite that sentence two more times, it uses another credit each time. This means it will use three credits total, even though you only keep one.

Pro Tip!

If your sentence is highlighted as complex (red or orange) and contains a passive voice highlight as well (green). Fix the passive voice first.

It will rewrite the entire sentence and correct both issues, while only using one credit.

This can be limiting. If the first sentence isn't what you want and you need a few tries to get it right. You're quickly chewing up credits. (More on this in just a moment)

Finishing a paragraph also has its quirks.

For example, when I asked Hemingway Editor Plus to complete the paragraph in the demo I made for our AI detector tests. The first time it wrote seven sentences, but used six credits. While the second time it wrote four sentences but used six credits.

It's not always clear how credits match up with sentences, and there's no way to control how many credits it uses when you use the "Continue Writing" feature.

I'd prefer fewer monthly credits if it meant more freedom with rewrites. It would be less stressful than watching credits disappear quickly.

Observation 2: The "Continue Writing" Feature

Another area that caught my attention in Hemingway Editor Plus is the "Continue Writing" option.

In my tests, I noticed that the content it generated sometimes didn't align with the overall context. For example, while crafting the introduction for my AI detector test, Hemingway Editor Plus attempted to summarize the entire post in just a few sentences.

This was most likely due to the post's title being included in the context, but it highlights how it can miss the overall understanding of what you want it to help with.

A screenshot of the Hemingway Editor Plus continue writing feature attempting to complete a paragraph

Here’s a screenshot of another example it generated when I created the introduction where it attempted to conclude the post. It seems the AI can miss the larger context and go off in an unexpected direction.

I believe the "Continue Writing" feature would benefit from a little user guidance. Instead of Hemingway Editor Plus immediately producing content, allowing users to give a short prompt or direction could help.

Most of the time, we have an idea of what we want to say but just need a little assistance in wording it right.

Observation 3: "Readability Rewrite" Consistency

One of the main draws to use Hemingway Editor Plus is for its "Readability Rewrite" feature. It promises to turn complex sentences into simpler ones in just one click. However, I've noticed that sometimes, even after a rewrite, the sentence remains at the same complexity or even gets more complicated.

This can be a problem, especially with the credit system. For instance, I started with a grade 10 sentence. The tool then changed it to a grade 11 sentence. It took three more tries and credits to get it down to grade 7.

A screenshot of the sentence rewriting screen in Hemingway Editor Plus, showing that is rewrote a Grade 10 sentence into a Grade 11.

First Attempt: Grade 10 rewritten to Grade 11

A screenshot of the sentence rewriting screen in Hemingway Editor Plus, showing that is rewrote a Grade 10 sentence into a Grade 10.

Second Attempt: Grade 10 rewritten to Grade 10

A screenshot of the sentence rewriting screen in Hemingway Editor Plus, showing that is rewrote a Grade 10 sentence into a Grade 7.

Fourth Attempt: Grade 10 rewritten to Grade 7

It would be helpful if Hemingway Editor Plus lets users choose the grade level or range they want for the document they’re editing. If the AI doesn't hit that level or range while rewriting, it should try again without using another credit.

Remember It's Still In Early Beta

Hemingway Editor Plus is in its early beta stage, which means it's still growing and evolving. Like any new tool, there's room for enhancements and tweaks.

The observations I've shared are intended to be constructive feedback. I believe these adjustments could improve the overall user experience.

Despite these areas of potential improvement, the core features of the editor remain valuable. I find myself regularly turning to Hemingway Editor Plus when editing content, including this review. The tool genuinely aids in making my writing more straightforward and concise.

I'm looking forward to the updates from the development team. They seem open to feedback and eager to improve. I believe we'll see great things from them soon.

Hemingway Editor Plus vs. GrammarlyGO

When I began writing blog content, I  leaned on two tools: Grammarly and Hemingway Editor. The fact that both released AI-powered updates has been fantastic for my workflow.

Hemingway Editor is my go-to for ensuring my writing fits the readability my audience expects. It offers a clean web interface that's perfect for focused writing, showing read time and word count metrics as well. It helps fix long sentences and common grammatical errors by highlighting passive voice and suggesting where to switch adverbs into verbs.

GrammarlyGO, on the other hand, is loaded with features tailored for fast, short-form content.

It's ideal for quick email replies, responding to customer reviews, or coming up with social media post ideas.

Both tools are unique and essential in their own right. Hemingway Editor Plus brings clarity to writing, while GrammarlyGO is all about speed and versatility.

Hemingway Editor Plus

Hemingway Editor Plus is a top choice for writers who want clear and concise writing. It provides quick editing suggestions, making it easy for those who might not have time or deep writing knowledge.

While we've discussed it's features earlier, here's a quick refresh:

  • Instant Editing Suggestions: The tool quickly points out long sentences, passive voice, and other writing issues. This helps make the text straight to the point and reader-friendly.
  • AI-Powered Rewrites: Instead of just pointing out issues, the tool suggests better ways to phrase things. You can speed up your editing in just a matter of a few clicks.
  • User-Friendly Design: Its design is easy to use, even if you're not tech-savvy. Features like color-coded suggestions help users understand and make changes faster.
  • Tone Matching: This feature ensures edits match the original tone of the writing. It helps keep the content genuine and engaging for readers.
  • Distraction-Free Writing: When you're focusing on writing, you want as few distractions as possible. Hemingway's write mode is designed to have zero distractions, and changing from one mode back to the other can be done instantly. So you can quickly get back to editing when you've finished with your writing.

My thoughts are that Hemingway Editor Plus is perfect for you and your team if you want to focus on simplifying your writing for your audience.

While it has far fewer features then it's competitors on this list, the few features it does offer are really polished. This is a tool that is focused on quality over quantity when it comes to it's feature set which makes a great case for why it compliments other tools well instead of directly replacing them.

GrammarlyGO

GrammarlyGO is built off of the solid foundation that Grammarly has offered for well over a decade. However, thanks to its AI update, it's now more than just an editing tool; it also creates new content on demand, like a blog post introduction.

Here's how it can be a great tool to cater to business writing needs:

  • Content Generation: Beyond revising text, GrammarlyGO can craft new content from instructions. For business owners juggling emails, social media, and blogs, this speeds up writing and ensures a steady content flow. The tool can quickly produce article outlines and introductions, jumpstarting content projects.
  • Robust Rewriting: GrammarlyGO's powerful rewriting function makes refining text a breeze. Do you want to expand an email draft from a couple of bullet points? With one-click prompts, you can have a complete email written for you in mere seconds. This is a big help for those needing to quickly improve their communications’ clarity and impact.
  • Extensive Integrations: GrammarlyGO isn't limited to its platform. It offers many integrations with desktop apps, browser extensions like Google Chrome, and even apps like Microsoft Word or Slack. This ensures seamless writing assistance wherever you work.
  • User-Centric Design: GrammarlyGO is designed for all, even those not tech-savvy. With its minimalistic interface, it's easy to navigate, and it's only ever a click away with its helpful widget.
  • Online Editor: The online editor offers the complete Grammarly toolset in a single interface. While being able to access Grammarly through its widget is incredibly helpful, sometimes you just want an expanded interface for larger documents.

GrammarlyGO is a robust suite of spelling and grammar editing tools, and now with the power of AI to assist with content generation, it makes it an easy tool to recommend.

However, with so many tools baked into a single app, it can be overwhelming to see how many settings and rules you can adjust for. I frequently find that Grammarly is making suggestions that aren't applicable for what I'm working on and it takes extra time to bypass those suggestions.

This is why I still find Hemingway's minimal feature set to be a great compliment to the robustness of Grammarly.

Be sure to check out our GrammarlyGO review if you want more information about all of it's new AI features.

Its main goal? Clear, digestible content. This makes it a top pick for businesses that prioritize straightforward communication.

GrammarlyGO is the Swiss Army knife of writing tools. It checks grammar, spelling, style, and more.

Its standout feature? The ability to create varied content, from brainstorming ideas to crafting email replies. However, where Hemingway Editor Plus guides on readability, GrammarlyGO misses out.

It offers a readability score, but it doesn't highlight what you need to change to make it better.

Regarding the price, Hemingway Editor Plus offers an annual plan at $8.33/month, while GrammarlyGO costs $12/month. Both tools offer free versions to kickstart your journey. However, it's worth noting that only GrammarlyGO's free plan includes access to AI capabilities.

Choosing between Hemingway Editor Plus and GrammarlyGO isn't a matter of which is "better." It's about what your writing task demands.
